Night Out

After a week at the Airbnb right outside of Vegas, Luxe was feeling stir crazy. She was back in the routine of the safe house: training with Alistair and Søren and studying witchcraft on her own. The only difference was the view from the backyard; instead of northern California woodlands, a prickly, blue-skyed desert stretched out for miles.

She knew it was all important work, but also, they were a short drive away from a fun night out on the strip. She remembered how much she enjoyed their evening at Oktoberfest, and she was craving that feeling of doing something carefree and normal.

She walked into the living room one evening to state her demand. Søren and Alistair were playing chess, while Calix read a novel.

Putting her hands on her hips, she cleared her throat to get their attention.

“What’s up, Sabrina?” Calix said with a glance, not putting down his book.

“We’re going out,” she announced.

“For dinner?” Søren asked absentmindedly as he studied the board. “There’s plenty of food here. Want me to make you something?”

“Thanks, but no. I don’t care how much food is here.” Her tone was firm. “We’re going for dinner, somewhere fancy, and then we’re going to the Strip to party Vegas-style.” She wasn’t usually the partying type, but she decided to adopt the “when in Rome” attitude. She chose this destination because she wanted the Vegas experience, and she was going to get it.

Calix put his book down and got to his feet. “Hell yeah. I’m gonna go change.” He gave her an affectionate pat on the head as he walked by, whispering, “Thanks, Sabrina. I was getting bored.”

Alistair and Søren looked more reluctant. “Are you sure, mo chuisle?” Alistair asked. “You know it’s a risk, goin’ out like that.”

“Then we shouldn’t have bothered to come here,” she shot back. “Get up. We’re going.”

Both of them sighed but stood. “Alright. Not sure about the fancy part, though, if that’s what you want to wear.” Søren gestured at her usual jeans and Doc Martens topped with a ragged hoody. “I guess we could do a glamor, but I’m not sure how well it would work. Glamors are for subtle things. Hell, I don’t have anything to wear either.”

“Oh,” she said. She hadn’t thought about that. “I don’t have anything else. All my stuff is like this.”

Alistair came to the rescue. “Don’t worry about that. Vegas has plenty of places to buy something more appropriate. We’ll do that first, then head to dinner.”

She squeaked, jumping up and down in excitement. “You’re the best!” she told him, throwing herself into his arms for a hug. He pulled her close. She could hear the smile in his voice when he murmured into her ear, “Anythin’ for you, mo chuisle.” She felt her face grow warm.

Søren was typing away on his phone and muttered jokingly, “I’m the one making the dinner reservations.”

She let go of Alistair and got on her tiptoes to kiss Søren on the cheek. “You’re also the best!” That pulled a reluctant smile out of him.
